The transcript below shows William Hope, a gardener aged 75, living in Edin Road, Walthamstow, Essex, with his wife Sarah Hope (nee Cook). Walthamstow lies approximately 10km north-east of the City of London, between the river Lea and Epping Forest. Until the mid 19th century it was a country parish, noted for its woodland and its fine view across the marshes to London. It then became a dormitory town in which industry played an increasing part.
